Build an inventory of transferable skills

Describe skills as actions, not broad nouns

Do not stop at “communication.” Describe what you did: coordinating a team whose schedules overlapped and documenting changes shows coordination, documentation, and prioritization. Review learning, volunteering, and care responsibilities alongside paid work using the same approach.

Make an evidence card for each experience

Fill five fields: situation, responsibility, action, outcome or learning, and tools used. Do not inflate an outcome; note the artifact, feedback, or record that could support it. Use O*NET wording to understand related tasks and skills, but do not force an experience into a category that does not fit.

Translate the inventory for a target role

□ Did I find three repeated actions? □ Does each have a real scene? □ Can I connect it to a target task? □ What action still needs practice? Turn one card into a resume bullet, portfolio explanation, or practice assignment and ask someone unfamiliar with the work whether it is clear.
